When we were very young, every day offered chances to discover a new world and express our creativity. Even in a transparent state, without knowing how to draw or use art materials, we could cover a blank canvas with what was in our hearts and imagine beyond its edges. We improvised to fill what was missing. That openness is the source of our creativity.
Open-ended, adaptable thinking.
For people to build their own relationship with an object or service, design must leave room for adaptation. When meaning and form are imposed from outside, every possibility converges on them. Because we are often driven toward a destination and tempted to remove anything inefficient, we sometimes take a detour and let ideas bend, shift, and change their nature.
Harmony through non-attachment.
Clear and simple arguments are often treated as inherently good. Yet many boundaries exist only because people created them; things were not separate to begin with. In pursuing clarity, we must avoid becoming attached to a single side or perspective.

Beautiful form and color, or a distinctive design unlike anything else, can certainly be exciting. But the answer may be quieter. We believe remarkable design does not call attention to how remarkable it is. It becomes a transparent presence in everyday life: a form simple enough for a child to draw, or a system that can be assembled without opening a manual.
Hands move before thought.
People of every age and culture need design. Wherever something makes a person stop because it is confusing or difficult to use, designers can refine it again and again. We pursue the ease that lets the hand move before conscious thought is required.
